Brian Madden
Presenter(s): Brian Madden (AI Tech Lead at ILKI)
Keynote
Language: English

Imagine standing at the platform's edge, watching as the AI train begins to pull away from the station. The sense of urgency, the fear of being left behind, and the realization that this technological force is reshaping the IT landscape at an unprecedented pace. In this inspiring, thought-provoking, and must-attend keynote, former VMware Distinguished Technologist and 30-year tech veteran Brian Madden will guide us on a journey to navigate the future of our careers in the era of artificial intelligence.

We’re all here today because we’ve witnessed the transformative power of past technological explosions. The virtualization and cloud computing revolutions changed everything, and we were fortunate enough to recognize their potential and make them part of our professional lives. Now, as we stand on the precipice of the AI revolution, we must once again rise to the challenge and adapt.

But this one feels different. Bigger. More uncertain. Overwhelming. If we try to run our traditional playbook, we’re quickly inundated with an infinite array of resources and content generated by the very technology we seek to understand! And every day, new stories, technologies, companies, and newsletters seem to reinforce our feelings of being left behind.

So how do we stay afloat? How do we maintain our sense of direction and purpose and take charge of our careers, building on our current skillsets, identifying what’s important to us, and building our own personal roadmaps to AI adoption?

In this thought-provoking and earnest talk, Brian will explore the importance of prioritizing and focusing on specific areas of interest, seeking out high-quality resources, and engaging with supportive communities like this VMUG. He’ll delve into techniques for continuous learning, hands-on experimentation, and critical evaluation of AI-generated content.

By attending this presentation, you will not only gain a deeper understanding of the future of IT and your career but also be inspired to embrace the AI revolution with confidence and determination. Don't miss this unique opportunity to join a journey of self-discovery, adaptation, and success, and let's catch the AI train together.

Brian Madden a world-renowned expert on the digital workplace with a prolific 30-year career. He’s authored six books (on Citrix, VMware, VDI, and DaaS) with over 100,000 copies sold, written over 2,000 tech articles, and given over 1,000 speeches and talks around the world. Brian was the creator of the popular BriForum conference which ran from 2005-2016, as well as BrianMadden.com, from 2001-2020. More recently, he spent 4 years at VMware as a Distinguished Technologist in VMware’s EUC Office of the CTO. Data Services Manager (DSM) version 2.0 allows DBAs and Data Managers to provision databases and data services onto the vSphere platform while simultaneously allowing vSphere Administrators to manage and control the resources consumed on the vSphere platform by these databases and data services. Join Cormac in this session where he will explain how to set up a new construct called an Infrastructure Policy on the vSphere platform via a new DSM plugin. See how these infrastructure policies provide the vSphere Administrators to manage and control the resources consumed on the vSphere platform by these databases and data services. We will also show see how Data Services Manager version 2.0 makes the role of the DBA or Data Manager more valuable. Self-service tasks such as provisioning and restore from backup can be implemented by end-users, allowing the DBA to focus on tasks that are more important to the line of business, such as tuning the database. Coupled with the automatic minor version upgrade feature, scaling capabilities (up and out), as well as automatic backups, this product should be very attractive to anyone running data services and databases on the vSphere platform. The session will close with an overview of the DSM API, which leverages the well known Kubernetes API. Using the API, we will see demonstrations on how to provision a new database, scale an existing database and restore a new database from a backup. This should be extremely interesting to anyone involved in the automation of databases and data services on the vSphere platform.

Amaury Garde has been working at VMware for just over 3 years now and started as an EMEA Academy Graduate. Now Cloud Architect in the Advanced Services team that works with product and sales teams to facilitate the successful sale and deployment of new solutions such as DSM, VLR and PAIF.

VMware is moving key infrastructure functions such as networking/security/storage off of the x86 complex, where they contend with applications for expensive CPU server resources, and accelerating them in domain-specific hardware. AMD Pensando is collaborating with VMW to integrate their technologies with the AMD DPU - an industry leading and groundbreaking fully-programmable PCIe adapter. Pensando’s leadership in providing cloud-like agility, security and operational simplicity is ideally suited for partnering with VMW in its next phase of redefining hybrid cloud services. As application resource demands continue to grow, VMW takes advantage of the DPU to offload the main server, freeing up precious CPU cycles, and at the same time bringing key services such as networking/security closer to where applications actually run and operate.

Title: This bunch of ethical hackers claims to be the voluntary fire brigade of the Internet DIVD scans the whole internet on the presence of Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) as soon as they are published and have a high score. When we find vulnerable URLs, we send them an email with notification on the vulnerability present, where we found it and what to do.

Just as an example: The case of Citrix NetScaler. But we could also talk about cases we ran on other vulnerabilities in VMware, Microsoft and other software vendors. How we helped 2,000 hacked and 5,700 vulnerable organizations. On July 19th 2023, DIVD took note of a new Citrix NetScaler ADC vulnerability that was being exploited by threat actors. This vulnerability had all the characteristics that scream criticality so naturally, DIVD mobilized to estimate the impact. At the time, DIVD already had a longstanding relation with the Security Research Team of cybersecurity company Fox-IT that originated from Citrix NetScaler research. Therefore, DIVD joined forces once more with Fox-IT to start a joint investigation.

DIVD is currently run by 130 volunteers and a small paid staff. It started in 2019 with the work of hacker Victor Gevers, who was already scanning and notifying the whole world for 20 years. He was joined by Parliamentarian cybermum Astrid Oosenbrug, writer/researcher and talk show host Chris van ‘t Hof, CISO/hacker Frank Breedijk and Security Analyst Lennaert Oudshoorn. Soon many hackers and partners joined.

My name is Bart Peeters and I am employed at VMware by Broadcom Netherlands in the role of Solution Engineer in the Dutch commercial team. My speciality is VMware Cloud Foundation, a platform for a Software-Defined Data Center comprised primarily of vSphere, vSan, NSX, and Aria operations. My main mission is to make the transition to a Multi-Cloud environment smooth and kick-start a ‘Cloud-Smart’ strategy. From my previous role as a Technical Consultant, I have gathered a lot of experience with VMware DataCenter Solutions like vSphere, vSan, and Horizon. Furthermore, I am well-versed with related technologies such as Cisco UCS/HPE (Compute), NetApp Ontap (Storage), Veeam Backup and Replication (Backup/DR), and Microsoft Azure (Public Cloud). Personally, I am extremely passionate about the Cloud Smart strategy, in which priority is placed on a well-thought-out governance and security framework before figuring out which workloads should be moved onto public, private, or Hybrid-Cloud.

Jerry Otto: Over 20 years working in IT in different branches (public and private sector) and different technical positions. Mostly in the connecting role between technology and management. In the past years I have been working as a lead architect at a municipality, where I designed and realized the cloud strategy for them. Within this strategy implemented an EUC transformation from Citrix to VMware and realizes a new hybrid cloud data center. I have a strong belief that IT should facilitate and not dictate.

My name is Edwin Jager and I work for VMware by Broadcom in the Netherlands. Currently in the role as Hybrid Cloud Infrastructure Solution Engineer. I mainly focus on vSAN and VMware Cloud Foundation. I started my career in IT more then 30 years ago as a Service Engineer. I have been solutions selling (both technical and sales) for over 20 years. Before I joined VMware I have had several roles and positions as Storage Specialist, Customer Solutions Engineer and Solutions Architect.

Presenter(s)
Track: VCF

Let’s explore the vSphere Configuration Profiles which allow describing the desired state of ESXi host configuration at cluster level. This feature allows streamlined server management at scale by capturing the desired state configuration of all hosts in the cluster in a single place. At the same time, it offers flexibility by accounting for host-specific settings and overrides of certain settings per host. Compliance and remediation of all hosts can be performed on cluster level. The configuration can be exported in JSON format. The settings files describing the Configuration Profiles can be edited in your favorite text editor and feature a JSON schema containing all supported configuration options. We’ll walk through the prerequisites to use vSphere Configuration Profiles and the process of transitioning existing clusters to desired state-based host settings management. Also, we’ll cover defining and editing the desired state configuration, checking host compliance, and applying the configuration on the ESXi.

My name is Georgi, Hristozov and I'm a software engineer at the Bulgarian office of VMware by Broadcom. I'm part of the vSphere UI team, where, for the last few years, my focus has been on vSphere Lifecycle Manager, Configuration Profiles, and other features in the Desired State area. My passions are modern UI engineering and usability. I have over 13 years of professional experience as a software engineer and lecturer at different companies and Sofia University.

Community. Gemeenschap. Communauté. Gemeinschaft.

Whatever language you speak, it means the same thing. Like-minded people tend to attract one another. There’s nothing more refreshing when you fear you are alone in the world, only to realize people just like you are dealing with (and solving!) the same challenges. Whether it be at work, away from work, technical, recreational, spiritual, or something extremely specific, tackling problems and celebrating success is much more fun as a group!

VMUG is only one of many examples of a community that can solve a multitude of problems in your personal and professional life. This session will show how a simple engineer in higher education can elevate to become the Vice President of a global technical community with more than 150,000 members in 73 countries by just raising their hand and volunteering.

It will also show how building community in the workplace, can create a culture that attracts talent and buy-in from leadership. A former CIO of mine used to say, “We want to create a culture that gives you the skills to leave if you choose, but makes you want to stay.” Community in the workplace is how that happens. The session will make use of anonymous interactive polling so the audience will be able to see what the crowd is thinking.

Matt Heldstab is from Hudson, Wisconsin in the USA. He is an Enterprise Systems Engineer for the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. Matt is focused on core VMware products, automation, application delivery, and EUC. He is also the VMware practice lead for his system of higher education which serves 33 colleges and universities and over 300,000 students. Matt has served on the VMUG Board of Directors since 2019 and is the current Vice President of the VMUG organization.

Matt is also a VMUG Leader, blogger, podcaster, 10x VMware vExpert, 8x VMware EUC Champion / vExpert EUC, and has spoken at several dozen VMUG User Conferences, VMworld, and other industry conferences on EUC, vSphere, Home Labs, automation, public speaking, and professional development.

The NSX Distributed firewall is the most use product to perform micro segmentation in virtualized environments. Its in-kernel, policy based firewall help to secure the traffic at the vNic level of every virtual machine in vSphere. But before you can define the firewall rules or security policies for you application you need to know which network traffic needs to be allowed or denied. What is currently the best way to find the network flows that make up you application landscape? At the moment VMware has multiple products available for this task, Aria operations for logs, Aria operations for Network and NSX Intelligence. Each have different option, advantages and installation options. In this session I will show you how they are working, how to install and use them.

Track: Management & Automation
